File a Consumer Complaint

Under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, complaints go to the District, State or National Commission depending on claim value.

District Commission: up to ₹50 lakh. State: ₹50 lakh – ₹2 crore. National: above ₹2 crore.
Fees
₹100 up to ₹5 lakh · ₹200 up to ₹10 lakh · ₹400 up to ₹20 lakh · ₹500 up to ₹50 lakh.
Timeline
Statutory target: 3-5 months. In practice: 12-24 months for contested matters.

Required documents

  • Invoice / bill / receipt of purchase
  • Warranty / guarantee card and product photos
  • Written communication with seller (emails, WhatsApp)
  • Affidavit verifying the complaint

Step-by-step process

  1. 1First send a written notice to the seller/service provider giving 15-30 days to remedy.
  2. 2Draft the complaint stating facts, deficiency, relief sought and compensation.
  3. 3File online at edaakhil.nic.in or in person at the appropriate Commission.
  4. 4Pay the prescribed fee (₹100–₹5000 depending on claim value).
  5. 5Attend hearings; e-hearings are permitted.
