File an RTI Application

Any Indian citizen can request information from a public authority under the RTI Act 2005.

Jurisdiction
PIO of the public authority holding the information (Central via rtionline.gov.in, or State portals).
Fees
₹10 application fee. Additional ₹2/page for photocopies if information is provided.
Timeline
30 days for reply. First appeal: 30 days. Second appeal (CIC/SIC): often 12-24 months.

  • Application fee ₹10 (Central) — waived for BPL applicants with proof

Step-by-step process

  1. 1Identify the correct public authority and its PIO.
  2. 2Draft specific, targeted questions (avoid open-ended requests).
  3. 3Submit online at rtionline.gov.in, by post, or in person with the fee.
  4. 4PIO must respond within 30 days (48 hours for life/liberty).
  5. 5On no reply or unsatisfactory reply, file First Appeal within 30 days, then Second Appeal to CIC/SIC within 90 days.
