Illustrative situation and records to prepare
Hypothetical example; not a reported case or a predicted outcome.
An unauthorised transfer appears in a bank alert. Use official bank and reporting channels promptly and preserve the transaction reference and acknowledgement. Do not wait for a polished draft or an AI explanation before reporting; the example does not promise recovery.
Short answer
If money has been lost in suspected cyber fraud, promptly contact your bank or payment provider through an official channel. Report financial cyber fraud through 1930 and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal; preserve the acknowledgement for follow-up.
Practical preparation
- Record transaction IDs, amount, date and time, beneficiary details and the sequence of contacts. Preserve original messages, numbers, URLs and screenshots.
- Ask the bank about securing the affected account or payment instrument and record the complaint reference. Never share an OTP, PIN or password with a person claiming to recover funds.
- Keep bank and portal references together. Follow official instructions for further information and police reporting; distinguish a complaint acknowledgement from an FIR or recovery confirmation.
Scope and limits
Reporting does not guarantee that money will be frozen or refunded. This overview does not assess bank liability, reimbursement eligibility or the registration of an FIR.
